Stripes are Ripe: Kid Style

What: Stripes—zebras shouldn’t have all the fun . . .

What we say: Girls have polka dots this season as a go-to pattern, so it is only fitting that boys have stripes as their trendy clothing design. After seeing a photo of Gwyneth Paltrow’s son Moses sporting a cool striped sweater, we thought that stripes are a fun, fashionable style for this season on everything from outerwear to accessories.

This Piece-Striped sweatshirt from Old Navy ($14.99) is reminiscent of the diagonal scuba diving logo, making it a sporty way to wear this stripe trend. Simple, comfy, and colorful, this one is sure to be a favorite. (You can also tone down the sporty look by paring this sweatshirt with a cool hat)

For prepsters, we love this Striped Rugby Polo from Target ($9.99) which not only perfectly embodies the trend, but also has cool accents, like a crest-shaped patch and true rugby shirt white collar.

We also love this Striped Rugby Scarf from Gap Kids ($14.50). Alternating grey and navy, this accessory is classic, yet hip, understated, yet trendy.

Fall Jackets: Kid Style

What: Our favorite styles for fall jackets, just in time for the cool weather to settle in . . .

The Lowdown: Baby it’s cold outside…but not quite cold enough to pull out the parkas and ski pants. That’s why we’re looking at some of our favorite fall jackets – fun, versatile styles that’ll be warm on your kids and easy on your wallets.

The Double-Breasted Peacoat from Old Navy ($18) is cute enough for your little pumpkin. In pink or khaki, it goes with almost any outfit, and it’s warm enough to stand up to brisk autumn days. The floral trim inside gives it a little extra feminine touch.

L.L. Bean’s Adirondack Barn Coat ($39.50) works for either boys or girls. It comes in blue, khaki, olive green, and pink, and it’s a great all-around jacket – durable enough for pumpkin picking, stylish enough for dress-up.

Your preppy girl will love the Cherokee Swing Jacket from Target ($16.99). It works well with a dress or to dress up her favorite pair of jeans.

The Sherpa-Lined Denim Jacket from the Children’s Place ($24.50) is perfect for any little boy. It screams rough-and-tumble for a hard day at play, but looks just as cute paired with khakis.

Feelin’ Flouncy: Kid Style

What: This lovely skirt makes dressing up feel more like playing dress-up.

What we say: JCrew CrewCuts’ Girls’ Silk Posy Pouf Skirt is positively pretty with its shimmering, yarn-dyed silk, tulle underskirt, and fun flower appliqués. But the price--$129.99 (on sale from $228!)—kinda ruins it for us. Here are some more wallet-friendly alternatives for gorgeous dressy skirts that provide the same fun and flounce. (Perfect for birthday parties or even the holidays as an alternative to the standard dress.)

GapKids has a cute taffeta party skirt ($29.50) that comes in both Russian red or true black. Like the CrewCuts skirt, this one features a tulle underskirt, however, this one peaks out about two inches, creating a layered look.

This animal print tiered skirt from The Children’s Place ($8.99) is more on the wild side. Made of cotton corduroy, this one is a pull-on style has a fully elasticized waist for easy dressing, and is topped off by a cute (non-functional) bow at the waist.

For a more casual skirt look, we like L.L. Bean’s Polka Dot Winterscape Skirt ($26.50). Its rich chocolate brown color is perfectly accented with pale blue dots and tiered ribbon trim.

Making Peace: Kid Style

What: Give peace a chance. Fashionably.

What we say: The election season is heating up, but there’s one issue everyone can agree on: Peace, man. From Martin Luther King declaring, “True peace is not merely the absence of tension: it is the presence of justice to John Lennon singing, “Imagine all the people living life in peace,” the message of harmony on earth is not only universal, it’s timeless. Now that luxury brands like Tiffany’s are making peace-sign jewelry, the message is becoming fashionable in more ways than one. We’ve said that kids can still be political even if they can’t vote and they can show their pride for a more peaceful world with these groovy items.

We love this Circle of Peace design from SandboxThreads.com. For $18, you choose whether the logo goes on a t-shirt, long-sleeve shirt, a cotton dress, or even on a onesie for little ones!

This Peace Tote from PeaceThings.com ($15) is a simple, low-key way to wear the sign. A navy peace sign is displayed on a natural-colored cotton canvas tote—great for a books, lunch, the beach, or even for kids to take along when they come with you to the grocery store.

Perhaps our favorite peace-related item are these fabulous Peace Sign Knee-High Tube Socks from Q-Sport ($7.95). They come in six groovy colors and are great for keeping tootsies warm or making a harmonious fashion statement.

Eco-Baby Alert: Nature’s Baby Organics

What: Organic shampoo and body wash, moisturizer, diaper cream, and other personal care products for baby

The Lowdown: Nature’s Baby Organics products are high on the wish list of celebrity moms like Julia Roberts, Courtney Cox, and Kate Hudson. The big attraction? Well it seems to be what’s not in them that have these products flying off the shelves. These natural, organic products allow you to pamper your baby without worrying about added synthetic fragrances or dyes that can irritate baby’s skin. Some more good news – the regular prices are fairly reasonable ($9.95 for an 8oz. bottle of shampoo and body wash), but now a number of Costco stores will also be stocking a gift set containing five of Nature’s Baby Organics most popular products at their wholesale prices.

Shop: Online @ NaturesBabyProducts.com or in-store at Costco. You can also check their website to find a retailer near you.
