Playgroups and Mom’s Clubs: Fun on a Budget

One of the best ways to fill your calendar with fun activities for you and your children without spending a ton of money is to join a playgroup or moms’ club. Members of these groups usually take turns hosting playgroups at their homes, and often plan other activities such as outings, charity drives, and moms’ nights out.
Not sure where to start looking for a playgroup or moms’ club in your area? There are a number of resources to aid you in your search:
• Playgroups USA: This site allows you to type in your zip code to find playgroups in your area. Here you’ll also find lists of local resources including libraries, parks, area attractions, and indoor play areas, as well as ideas and themes for playgroup activities.
• Meetup.com: Meetup.com allows people to connect with others in their community. You can start a new Meetup Group or join one which already exists. There are currently thousands of Meetup Groups here for parents and children. I’ve used Meetup.com myself, and have been gratified to find a great group of other moms in my area who work from home. Other groups include Meetups for stay-at-home moms, single parents, new and expecting parents, gay parents, parents of teens, and more.
• National Organization of Mothers of Twins Clubs, Inc.: As the mom of twins, I know getting in touch with other moms of multiples can be a big help, especially in the early years. NOMOTC allows you to find links to moms’ clubs in your area. It’s also a great resource for information on parenting twins.
• Craigslist.org: Start by clicking on your city or state, and find the link for groups in your area. You’ll have to sort through listings for a variety of groups, but most areas have ads for moms’ clubs showing up every week.
With these resources, you’re sure to connect with other parents in no time!
