Do Good: Recycle Halloween Costumes

November 7, 2007 09:01 AM

halloween costumeWhat: Just because Halloween has come and gone doesn’t mean you should be chucking away the costumes.

The Lowdown: So much money is spent on cosutmes that are only worn for one day and then thrown out. But there are so many others things you can do with them.

  • Keep them and start a dress up box.

  • Donate to your children’s school theatre group.

  • Donate to a Halloween recycling program or start your own.

  • Donate to a  local charity store.

  • Save them for when nieces and nephews are old enough to wear them. If you are really organized and have the space, think about saving them for grandchildren.

The Bottom Line: Think about how much money you spend each year. It’s great if you can afford to buy new costumes every year, but for parents can’t, being able to get barely used costumes for free or at a low prices makes Halloween a little more bearable. Also, remember that clothes pollute too. If you are throwing costumes in the trash, you are creating unnecessary waste.
