What: How to fit yoga into your busy schedule or while playing with your kids.
The Lowdown: Most of us aren’t getting enough exercise and finding the time to do it is often the main reason. The idea of getting an hour or two to yourself a couple days a week to go to the gym is a bit too daunting for many mothers. Of course, we know that besides having physical health benefits, exercise also does wonders for your brain, so it’s important to find a way to fit some sort of exercise into your life. Yoga is a hit in the momma world because besides relieving stress, improving posture and muscle strength, you don’t need a gym membership or a personal trainer to do it. You can incorporate it into your every day life and when your child is still young you can get them involved too. If your new to yoga, you should start buy getting a book or DVD to learn the basics. While yoga is a gentle form of exercise, you still need to be careful with your body.
Newborn to 3 months - When I said getting your children involved, I meant it! Baby Om is a good book for new moms with tiny babies. It shows you how to do a number of safe positions with your child and they can be done anywhere and any time.
Toddlers and older children - Yoga Pretzel Set is a fun way to teach kids about yoga and get them involved. The bendy figure and step-by-step cards make it easy to understand. The Complete Idiots Guide to Yoga With Kids is also a great beginner books. Comparing positions to animals and nature gets the kids learning and exercising at the same time.
Just for mom - of course we can’t spend all our time teaching our kids how to do sun salutations and bend like a tree. Sometimes real life takes over and it’s then that you want to be able to incorporate yoga. Just because you don’t an hour to yourself doesn’t mean you still can’t fit some stretches and poses in. Try Everyday Calm, which shows you how to make yoga a part of standing in line at the bank, waiting to pick the kids up, or your morning ritual. Mommy Yoga is also a good book to give you tips on how to get the benefits from yoga while carrying your diaper bag, pushing the stroller and to call the bank all at the same time.
What We Say: We don’t all have to be yogis to receive the benefits of yoga and anything that helps you relieve stress and feel good about your body will help. Once you learn the basics, you won’t need to follow a book so don’t let a lack of knowledge and experience keep you from jumping in.
