Today, while cleaning up my baby’s wardrobe, I came across at least 4 items that still had tags on them. They were all gifts and even though I was giving the clothes to charity, it seemed like a waste that my baby hadn’t been able to appreciate the presents. This has happened periodically since my bambino was born – unused gifts that stay wrapped up or tagged. There are usually four reasons this happens. Before are a few things I wish all grandparents, aunts, uncles, and friends new about buying baby clothes:
Seasons: If my bambino was born in December, a summer dress for sizes 9-12 months is most likely not going to get worn! And vice versa, giving her winter boots in March that will only begin to fit in April is a wasted gift.
Material: Babies have incredibly sensitive skin so stick to natural fibers. Also, check how materials stretch and give. I’m also surprised at how many baby sweaters are a struggle to get on because the material is too stiff around the shoulders and arms.
Practicality: I’ve received a couple of items that are incredibly beautiful but require hand washing or dry cleaning. And while I love dressing up my baby in lovely clothes, the chances of me having enough time drop of clothes at the dry cleaners or get the Woolite out are limited.
Convenience: Are there more than 3 buttons? Is that little skirt loose enough for a bambino who’s learning to crawl? Will that collar be tugged at all day long? Kids are kids who move, wiggle, tumble and crawl. No matter how cute they look, if it’s hard to put on or uncomfortable, it’s going to end up in the back of the closet.
