What: With back-to-school time less than a month away, it’s time for the most important purchase of the year—the backpack. As these bags become fashion statements, many kids want to start the year fresh with a new one each September.
What We Say: Whether you need to replace a worn book-bag or your child simply wants a new look for the new year, you can find great bags and backpacks for low prices. (And don’t forget to donate old ones to Goodwill, Salvation Army, The American Cancer Society, or another charitable organization, if they are in good condition.)
For Disney or cartoon-themed bags, check out Kohls.com. They have everything from High School Musical and Hannah Montana messenger bags to Hello Kitty and The Incredible Hulk backpacks all for around $14.99.
For kids who don’t want to show their favorite cartoon or character on their bag, try Old Navy. I like the Boys Messenger Bag ($12.50) in green, blue, or brown for its hip design and sturdy fabrics.
The Embellished Canvas Messenger Bag for girls ($16.50) comes in three funky patterns and even has a secret side pocket for storing notes!
For a more rugged, sturdy backpack for active kids (or ones with lots of heavy books!), I like the Ergonomic School Backpack from Target ($19.99). With a sleek design kids will find cool and functional pockets and pouches for storage, and padded shoulder straps this one perfectly blends fashion with function.
