What: For teens and tweens headed back to school, there is one important word when it comes to style – preppy.
The Lowdown: This is not your mother’s preppy! Instead we’re seeing some old classics with a new twist. As those in the know over at Elle Girl tell us, “Forget about the popped up collars, cardigans draped around the neck, ribbon belts and pearl necklaces.” Instead think plaid skirts, blazers in fun colors and fabrics, preppy pastels paired with black, fitted sweaters, long cardigans, and ballet flats.
What we say: Those of us who remember the styles of the ‘80s (we won’t point fingers, but you know who you are) may equate preppy with starchy and unfeminine – too close to a uniform for comfort. There’s no need to worry, though; although we’re seeing a lot of the old classics, the new preppy styles have great shapes and fun details that give prep a fresh, new look.
Shop: There are some great finds for your budding prepster at the Gap, like this pleated plaid skirt for $26.50, paired with a short-sleeved shirt with slightly pleated cuffs for $19.50. Oh, and the patent headband for $7.50 will add the finishing touch!
